A round of applause for Child Psychologists

I'd like to give mad props to Child Psychologists all over the world!  You guys get a lot of crap.  People bring in their crazy children and get all mad when you diagnose them with ADD or ADHD.

Sure, it's being over dianosed. I do believe it's normal for kids to be hyper and full of energy. Hell, I take my kids and run them like golden retievers just to get some out.  That being said, some kids really do have these disorders and it's a serious thing.

On the other hand, the majority of kids just show the symptoms and that is where the mad props come in.  I give them huge credit for not diagnosing these kids with bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia.

Think about it.  If you were a child psychologist and had never actually met a pre-schooler before, what would be your first instinct? I would wrap those little people in straight jackets and throw them in the loony bin.

Hell, my pre-schooler just displayed symptoms of both disorders in the 20 seconds it took to leave the park.

First he showed a new personality by getting into the stroller without complaining.  That was a shocker.  He was all happy-go-lucky until he saw a lollipop.  Now this could be considered personality # 2 or a bi-polar dramatic switch.  Keep in mind that the switch was dependant on my reaction to said lollipop. It was 10:30am and my reaction was a big fat no.  And cue the mood swing.

This is not the only time I've witnessed a drastic mood swing.  Just put two 3 year olds in a room with 1 plastic sword and you'll see a whole lot of mood swings and personalities.  I can't even imagine what the child psychologist at my son's school sees when she walks into the classroom of 20 three year olds.  It must blow her mind! And yes, the school does have a child physchologist.  That's just how we roll.

It's amazing what comes out of these little guys and how complex their feelings can be over the littlest thing.  One switch in plans could be the opening of Pandora's box.  An overtired child can be the beginning of Armaggetan.  Regardless of how "good" a kid is, there's always an x factor. You never quite know how they are going to react at any given time.

So to all the Child Psychologists of the world, keep those chins up.  The only thing crazier than the children are the parents.

  1. yep... and you can have four of your own and each will have a different personality/emotional outbreak for the same situation.
