Why You Should Drink Fresh Coconut Water

I love the water in a cold freshly opened coconut. It's seriously good stuff. Now, Brazilians believe that this water is the cure all for everything.  When in doubt, drink some coconut water.  This goes double for the poops, dehydration, vomiting, and hangovers.

You know what, they have a point!  Check out these coconut water facts I found:

  • Coconut water is more nutritious than whole milk.  It has no casein and a good balance of magnesium and calcium.
  • Rich in Vitamin C
  • Acts as a natural diuretic and helps cleanse the liver and kidneys.
  • Reduces problems for infants helps with GERDS, failure to thrive  and other intestinal disorders
  • Also helps other digestive problems such as indigestion, colitis, gastric ulcers, and diarrhea,
  • It's an antioxidant, scavenging many types of destructive free radicals and protecting hemoglobin from nitrite-induced oxidation
  • Chelating properties the coconut water contains "gold: and "silver" and sulphurated proteins, which is crucial to detox mercury and other heavy metals out of the cells and membranes.  It also has certain fatty acids and sulfur holded amino acids to attach to the mercury. It is said to be water which contains  nature's own "trick".
  • Found as a blood plasma substitute because it is sterile, does not produce heat, and does not destroy red blood cells and is readily accepted by the body.
  • Coconut water was used during World War II in emergency transfusions.
  • Kills intestinal worms.
  • Aid the body in fighting viruses that cause the flu, herpes, and AIDS
  • Helps prevent osteoporosis
  • Helps eliminate Candida yeast infections
  • Inhibits the growth of mycoplasma
  • Helps eradicate eczema
  • It contains sugar, fiber, proteins, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and provides an isotonic electrolyte balance, making it a nutritious food source. It is used as a refreshing drink throughout the humid tropics, and is used in isotonic sports drinks. It can also be used to make the gelatinous dessert nata de coco. Mature fruits have significantly less liquid than young immature coconuts, barring spoilage
  • Coconut water contains more potassium (at about 294 mg) than most sports drinks (117 mg) and most energy drinks..
  • Coconut water has less sodium (25mg) where sports drinks have around 41mg and energy drinks have about 200mg!

  1. Love the stuff - have some open right now, in fact, and good to know since I ate a giant plate of sushi last night. I look for that and emergen-c to keep the "airplane juice cooties" at bay while flying this weekend. My father is 65 and drinks some before he starts his shift at a bakery (he works a couple hours a day there for fun - keeps him social and off the streets) and he swears it gives him a lift. Rock the day, Rachel!

  4. I didn't know coconut water had all this good stuff going for it. I did know it's great when you're dehydrating, almost dying under Brazil's heat though. I heart it!!! I bounced and squeaked when I saw Walgreens had it for sale, granted in tetrapak boxes, but still. It has become the ultimate sports drink in Chicago, you can find it almost everywhere now and some are fruit flavored (pineapple, mango, and a some others I can't remember), which I think is disgusting. Maybe they trying to adapt it to America's palate? Go figure.

Jim, next time we have Caipirinhas, we are totally making coconut water ice!

  7. Who knew they had all that good stuff? Whenever we talk about our dream house it includes a dedicated faucet that pours out chilled agua de coco.

My husband (who I swear is not 90, but sometimes he sounds like it) talks about the good ol' days when every coconut you bought was fleshy and full of juice. He blames its being sold in the US and getting all trendy, because he thinks the producers are harvesting the coconuts too early. Every once in awhile I do get pretty sorry one, but I don't know if there's any truth behind it.

  8. I had no idea that coconut water is so good for you, but why would I, I don't like it. I've never liked coconut either.
However, I may start drinking coconut water once in awhile after reading this.

  9. The first time that my father in law was in Brazil he found it revolting. Then he heard it was good for his heart. It took him two days to get addicted to it.

  11. I wonder if the boxed liter of coconut water (made by do bem) preserves the same phenomenal nutritional qualities as the fresh? Probably not, but it's so much easier to buy a box!
